Lough Acoose House is scenically situated on the Glencar Road at the foot of the MacGillyCuddy's Reeks with Carrauntuohill Mountain and looking straight into beautiful Lough Acoose. The Coomloughra circuit starts and ends near the house and is considered to be the country's finest horseshoe walk as it covers Irelands highest summits: Caher (1001 mtrs), Carrauntuohill (1039mtrs) and Beenkeragh (1010mtrs).
The view from any of the three mountains is stunning! The route is best done in an anti-clockwise direction to reach Carrauntuohill before Beenkeragh. The stretch between these two mountains is narrow and can be dangerous in high winds and in wet conditions and should not be attempted by people likely to suffer from Vertigo. In these cases just return on the route you came to Carrauntuohill. The circuit takes about 6-8 hours and requires good condition and all necessary gear, suitable clothing including
wind-
and waterproof anorak and walking boots. Navigation is fairly easy. Click here for a map. There are a number of access points to the circuit from the house which we'll be happy to show you. We provide you with packed lunches and drinks and after return we'll have a cold beer waiting for you! Enjoy the walk and return safely!
